IB School
The Machabeng International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme consists of IB1 and IB2 which is equivalent to Sixth Form (UK), Grades 11 and 12 (USA) and Standard 10 and University (RSA). There are no IB equivalent Lesotho grades.
Students can choose to follow the IB Diploma or certificate courses. The IB Diploma is awarded on the basis of both course work and external written examinations taken at the end of a two year study period. In order to obtain the IB Diploma, each student must take six subjects, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). One subject must be chosen from each of the following groups:
Group 1 : Language A1 (first language) - usually English or Sesotho
Group 2 : Language B (a foreign language) - usually English, French or Spanish or second Language 'A'
Group 3 : Individuals and Societies - History, Geography, Business & Management or Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS)
Group 4 : Experimental Sciences - Biology, Chemistry or Physics
Group 5 : Mathematics
Group 6 : Visual Arts, Theatre Arts or an additional subject from groups 1 to 4
In addition it is an IB requirement for Diploma students that they participate in Creativity Action Service (CAS) activities, complete an Extended Essay of 4000 words, completes a course in the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) concluded by a TOK essay.
It is also compulsory for students to participate in Physical Education classes.
